HAVANA, Cuba, Mar 17 (acn) Two new wind farms are planned to be built on the north coast of Maisí, Cuba´s easternmost tip, with the aim of continuing to make progress in the use of renewable energy sources.
The investigations carried out have entered their final phase and so far show encouraging results, Granma newspaper reported today.
Previous calculations indicate that sustained winds from the northeast blow at speeds close to seven meters per second on at least 128 days of the year, values that if confirmed will make the investment possible.
It is planned to install 175 mega watts of power generated from wind energy in this area, which would allow the country stop importing the equivalent of more than 138,000 tons of fossil fuel and no longer emitting 280,000 tons of pollutant material into the atmosphere.
