HAVANA, Cuba, Apr 7 (acn) Latin America's Health Promotion Advisor, Alfonso Contreras talked on Tuesday in Havana about regional strategies whose main objective is to strengthen leadership in the health promotion network.
During the 2nd International Congress on Health Promotion which kicked off on Tuesday at Havana's Convention Center with over 300 delegates from over 10 countries, the expert warned, during a teleconference on the current Latin American scenario characterized as an aging population with growing ailments like cardiovascular diseases and cancer, both main causes of death in 7 in every 10 over 70 years of age.
Contreras insisted in the importance in building a regional health platform aimed at working in the elimination of these illnesses and promote better living styles in consequence with the development policies of each nation.
He highlighted the importance of cooperating in education and health to facilitate good political decisions with the objective of supporting programs related to public health.
He also stressed the need for action plans among the health promotion networks of the World Health Organization, UNESCO and the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean and other institutions.
The specialist also stressed the need for professional training and highlighted successful programs like the Virtual Course on Health Promotion and the Community Tool Box and Action Toolkit available to the population to prevent illnesses and maintain a healthy life style, he added.
In addition to these programs there is the Network for Latin America and the Caribbean of Health Promotion Management, said Contreras during his speech in the conference.
A dialog round table was also held on the first day of the event for the UN Development Program which demonstrated its 50 years of experience of partners at the service of the people and nations. The debate was headed by MyrtaKaulard, Coordinator of the UN in Cuba and other experts.
Other issues were health promotion and social factors and the prevention and control of smoking habits.
"Health in all Policies: Challenges for Sustainable Development" is the slogan of the event that will conclude until Thursday and gathers the 2nd International Congress of Health Promotion, 10th Regional Workshop on Promotion and Education for the Health in Schools and Universities, Symposium on Communication and Samples of International Health Communication Products.
