Fiji President Extends Gratefulness to Cuba

HAVANA, Cuba, Apr 4 (acn) The President of Fiji, Jioji Konousi Koronte, expressed his gratefulness to Cuba for its collaboration with his country in the field of health and said that Fiji will continue to strengthen relations with the Caribbean nation.

A report by PL news agency reads that President Konousi made his statements after receiving the credentials of Cuban ambassador to Fiji Mario Alzugaray, during a ceremony in the government palace in the capital Suva.

The head of state stressed the arrival over the next few days in Fiji of two Cuban epidemiologists to assist citizens in areas affected in February by storm Winston, the worst such national phenomena to hit the country.

Ambassador Alzugaray also met in Fiji with the ministers of Foreign Affairs, Sports and Youth, with the secretary of Health and Medical Services and with members of the major regional organizations with seats in Suva.

President Konousi and Foreign Minister Ratu Inoke expressed satisfaction for the process aimed at improving US-Cuba relations, whose advancement they consider to be the result of the merits of the Cuban people and their stance in the defense of self determination and national sovereignty.

The two Fiji officials also condemned the over-50-year US economic, commercial and financial blockade of Cuba.
Cuba and Fiji established diplomatic relations in July 2002, a starting point for important bilateral collaboration actions between the two countries.
