UNESCO General Director receives Cuban Minister

UNESCO General Director receives Cuban MinisterHAVANA, Cuba, Dec 11 (acn) Irina Bokova, UNESCO Director General, welcomed in Paris Elba Rosa Perez, Cuban Minister of Science, Technology and Environment, who is attending the World Summit on climate change.

Prensa Latina news agency reports that they exchanged issues on the status of the negotiations taking place in the context of the global event; the impact of climate change, particularly for developing countries and small islands, as is the case of Cuba.
Both officials agreed on the need to find an ambitious solution which guarantees the existence of man and his sustainable development.
Bokova appreciated the visit of the minister and recognized the active participation of the Cuba in the United Nations for Education, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).
Meanwhile, Perez talked about the actions carried out in her country to adapt to climate change and the efforts the government is making as part of its overall development strategy.
She referred to the participation of Cuban experts in various subsidiary bodies on this area, among which she mentioned the International Oceanographic Commission, the Bioethics Committee, and the International Hydrological and Management of Social Transformations Programmes.
The minister thanked Bokova´s support to the Carlos J. Finlay UNESCO Prize for Microbiology.
The meeting was attended by Dr. Flavia Schlegel , UNESCO Assistant Director-General (ADG) for the Natural Sciences Sector, and officials from her office.
Dulce Buergo, Cuban Ambassador to UNESCO, and members of the official delegation to the global climate change summit were present on the Cuban side.
