Raul Castro tells Obama that Cuba is ready for a new relationshipHAVANA, Cuba, Sep 29 (acn) Cuban President Raul Castro reiterated his US counterpart Barack Obama his government's willingness to build a new kind of relationship between the two countries.

During a closed-door meeting with Obama at the UN Headquarters, Raul also ratified that in order to have normal relations, the US economic, commercial and financial blockade of Cuba must be lifted, Cuban foreign minister told reporters in New York.

The Cuban Head of State recalled that the blockade inflicts damage and limitations on the Cuban people and affects the interests of US citizens, while other issues that affect Cuba sovereignty are still to be resolved.

The Cuban foreign minister explained that the meeting took place in a respectful and constructive environment as the two presidents exchanged views on the recent visit by Pope Francis to Cuba and the United States.

The two leaders also dealt with issues related to cooperation in areas for mutual benefit and to assist other countries like Haiti.

The meeting was attended by US Secretary of State John Kerry; National Security advisor, Susan Rice; the US permanent representative at the UN Samantha Power and deputy National Security advisor Mark Feierstein.

The Cuban representatives at the talks included foreign minister Bruno Rodriguez; National Security advisor Alejandro Castro Espin and vice-advisor of that entity Juan Francisco Arias. And also present was Josefina Vidal, general director for the United States at the Cuban Foreign Ministry, along the Cuba ambassador to Washington Jose Ramon Cabanas.
