Cuba and Micronesia establish diplomatic relationsHAVANA, Cuba, Sep 12 (acn) Cuba and Micronesia established diplomatic relations during the 46th Forum of the Pacific Islands, held in Papua New Guinea.

The historic event was attended by the president of the Pacific nation Peter M. Christian and by the director general for Bilateral Affairs at the Cuban Foreign Ministry, Gerardo Peñalver.

The two side expressed their satisfaction for the decision to formalize relations and explored formulas to develop bilateral cooperation and to strengthen links of friendship.

The ceremony was attended by high-level local authorities and by Cuban ambassador Maria del Carmen Herrera.

The new official relationship also aims at strengthening coordination at the international arena with respect to issues of mutual interest, reads the announcement posted on the webpage of the Cuban Foreign Ministry.

Micronesia has been one of three nations that have abstained for years to vote the Cuban resolution presented every year at the UN General Assembly demanding the lifting of the US economic, commercial and financial blockade of Cuba.
