Latin American Unity: the Focus of People's SummitHAVANA, Cuba, Jun 12 (acn) Strengthening unity, integration and solidarity in Latin America and the Caribbean was the point of coincidence on Thursday at the People's Summit held in Brussels.
The need for unity of living and progressive forces of the region and for placing human beings at the center of society were some of the approaches advocated in a working group on the issue, the Prensa Latina news agency highlighted.

Aleida Guevara, one of the daughters of Ernesto Che Guevara, said that market forces can not prevail over the well-being of populations, and also referred to the U.S. imperialist appetite, while saying it is the main threat posed to nations the region.
Venezuelan historian Juan Romero spoke about the need to strengthen the anti-imperialist stance, an effective policy of integration and new forms of South-South cooperation, a goal supported by the existing mechanisms of integration in the area.
Representatives of the anti-colonial Movement X that emerged in Europe asserted that we can not talk about integration without talking about the excluded. In their opinion, it is a concept that has to do with exchanges at the economic, scientific and political levels.
They also emphasized that it must be an integration in which equality and solidarity constitute a fundamental pillar, as well as the struggle against poverty, racism and dependence.
They mentioned the work carried out by a Cuban medical brigade in Honduras to provide care to those affected by Hurricane Mitch in 1998, a fact that caught their attention.
Obey Ament, of the French Communist Party, stressed the importance of developing solidarity between Europe and Latin America and the Caribbean in both directions.
Latin Americans have shown that they not only fight but also win, which is evidenced by the announcement made on December 17 by the Presidents of Cuba, Raul Castro, and Barack Obama, of the United States, of moving towards the reestablishment of bilateral relations.
The People's Summit, in which more than 40 social organizations and numerous political leaders of the two regions participated, wound up on Thursday night in a Basilica of Brussels.
