Nikolic told reporters that he was able to meet the Cuban people who, like the Serbian, know the meaning of freedom and said that his visit was fantastic.

The Serbian head of state was awarded the Jose Marti Order, the highest distinction granted by Cuba and he also held official talks with President Raul Castro.

This was the first visit to the island by a Serbian president since former Yugoslavia disintegrated. Bilateral relations between Cuba and Serbia were established August 30, 1943.
