HAVANA, Cuba, February 16 (ACN) The Mexican newspaper La Jornada today published the appeal from the Cuban Writers and Artists Association (UNEAC by its Spanish acronym) to artists and intellectuals worldwide in defense of the Caribbean nation's sovereignty, the Cuban cultural institution reported on its Facebook page.
The document stated that Cuba has resisted for centuries for its independence and that, since 1959, it has promoted social and cultural policies that have eradicated illiteracy, reduced infant mortality, and fostered gender equality.
UNEAC emphasized that, despite the economic, commercial, and financial blockade imposed by the United States since 1962, the country maintains free health, education, and cultural programs, as well as international solidarity through the deployment of doctors and teachers.
The text emphasized that Cuba has never attacked another nation, poses no threat to anyone, and has never fostered terrorism.
Its only “crime” has been defending its sovereignty while facing extraterritorial measures that affect hospitals, schools, industries, and access to basic services.
The cultural organization called on intellectuals and artists worldwide to mobilize in defense of the Cuban cause, considering that supporting Cuba means defending peace and the right of peoples to fully exercise their sovereignty.
The appeal concluded with the words of National Hero Jose
Marti, spoken in 1895: “Whoever rises up for Cuba today, rises up for all time,” and offered the following email address for those wishing to express their support: This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.
