HAVANA, Cuba, Mar 21 (acn) Scarcity of water will affect many regions of the world by 2025, while in others authorities will declare water stress, which will lead to the displacement of millions of people demanding water for their survival, a Cuban expert warned in Havana.
During a ceremony marking World Water Day at the Cuba Water Resources Institute, management and innovation expert Alien Perez alerted that water demand will increase significantly, as that vital natural resource because scarce around the world.
The expert noted that Cuba is vulnerable to this situation because it geographically is an archipelago and he stressed the urgent need to preserve the natural resource on the island, where numerous programs are underway to guarantee appropriate supply levels.
Fernando Brugman, UNESCO representative in Cuba, said that nearly 750 million people, more than one in every 10 inhabitants, have no access to better water sources. Brugman cited the messages sent by UN Secretary General Ban ki-moon on the occasion.
