Havana, April 16 (ACN) United Nations Development Program (UNDP) resident representative in Barbados and Eastern Caribbean, Limya Eltayeb, called on Caribbean island nations to reinforce preventive actions in the face of predictions about an active hurricane season this year.
Researchers predict the occurrence of 12 to15 named storms to form in the Atlantic. Six to eight may grow strong enough to become hurricanes (the historical average is six), with the possibility of two to three storms becoming major hurricanes.
The UNDP official recalled that a hurricane could wipe out the advancement made in local economy and social development in just hours and recalled that developing small island states are the most vulnerable territories to extreme weather phenomena.
The official called for on-time preparedness and bear in mind the vulnerabilities of each nation, the possible cooperation among countries by combining projects, investment and government actions.
