HAVANA, Cuba, Dec 9c (acn) The Community of Caribbean States and Cuba reaffirmed on Monday in this capital the willingness to strengthen South-South cooperation as an expression of solidarity and cornerstone for the development of countries of the area.
In the Final Declaration of the 5th CARICOM-Cuba Summit, held at Revolution Building, the member states of the regional bloc and Cuba acknowledged that bilateral exchanges in health, the development of human resources, construction and sports, has contributed effectively to the growth and well-being of their peoples.
Participants in the important forum championed the union of efforts to improve productivity, infrastructure, and air and maritime connectivity, and with it to expand economic relations in the region.
The implementation of the Agreement of Trade and Economic Cooperation between CARICOM and Cuba –updated at the meeting-, which will allow the free access, with zero duties, of over 300 products from the two parties, will have a favorable impact in that objective.
Participants agreed to promote and expand cooperation by way of the adoption of preventive measures, the training of qualified staff and the carrying out of research works to prevent the spreading of the Ebola fever virus and fight it if necessary.
Delegates at the forum also insisted on the need for Caribbean nations to take advantage of the potential of regional, sub-regional and international mechanisms, in the interests of joint development.
