Colombian Peace Talk Focus on De-escalation of Armed Conflict

HAVANA, Cuba, Dec 10 (acn) Colombia's FARC guerrillas and the government open a new round of talks in Havana on Wednesday to advance in the de-escalation of the armed conflict that has prevailed for 50 years in that South American nation.

In a recent joint communiqué, the representatives of the Colombian government and the guerrillas said that after considering the events of the past weeks, they agreed that the crisis has been over.

"We have agreed that the new round of talks running from December 10 to 17 will aim at advancing the issue of the de-escalation of the conflict as soon as possible."

The scheduled of the talks marks December 15 as the arrival of the first delegation of organizations related to the gender sub-commission; on December 16 the parties will carry out the fifth and last hearing of the victims of the conflict.

Then, in the second half of January the will set a date to resume the talks, the joint communiqué explains and expresses the appreciation to the warrantor countries, Cuba and Norway, and the International Red Cross Committee for their support, which was crucial for the most recent releases as accorded to by the delegations in Havana.

The two parties also agreed to setting up a permanent mechanism through the warrantor countries to facilitate the solution to any possible crisis that could arise in the future, the communiqué concludes.
