Cuba and Pakistan to Expand Cooperation Relations

HAVANA, Cuba, Oct 23 (acn) Cuba and Pakistan expressed their willingness to expand bilateral collaboration in different fields based on the relations of friendship and good understanding between the two countries.

The Pakistani government news agency APP referred to a meeting between the National Security and Foreign Affairs advisor to the Prime Minister, Sartaj Aziz and Cuban deputy foreign minister Rogelio Sierra.

During the talks, Aziz recalled that in the aftermath of the earthquake that hit Pakistan on October 2005, which claimed over 73 thousand lives, Cuba set up 32 tent hospitals in the most affected areas and sent 2 thousand 546 doctors who, in over eight months, assisted 1.8 million Pakistani citizens and saved more than two thousand lives.

Couple of years after the quake, Cuba offered scholarships to hundreds of Pakistanis who wanted to study medicine at the Latin American Medical School. More than 290 of those youths graduated as medical doctor in July, while another 600 will graduate from that center next year.

The Cuban deputy foreign minister on his part reiterated his country's willingness to further strengthen relations with Pakistan. The Cuban official will wind up his visit to Pakistan on Friday after he meets with lawmakers at the Pakistani parliament's commissions of Economic Affairs and Higher Education.
