HAVANA, Cuba, Sep 24 (acn) Cuban foreign minister Bruno Rodriguez demanded at the United Nations a political compromise by industrialized countries to give effective response to climate change and its threats on humanity.
Speaking at the Climate Summit, Rodriguez drew attention on unquestionable scientific evidence about the dangers posing on the planet, such as the increase of the sea level and temperatures and ice melting.
According to the Cuban official, the main cause of the current world scenario is the irrationaly and unsustainable models of production and consumption imposed by the capitalist economic system, which generates inequality and poverty.
Industrialized countries have a historic responsibility and have more resources, he said and alerted that climate change will worsen accumulated environmental problems, poverty and food insecurity.
The lack of effective action and the necessary international financing to eradicate these problems find a contrast to the irrational military spending imposed on the world, which in 2012 reached 1 trillion 756 billion dollars, with the United States using 37 percent of that amount.
Rodriguez recalled that in the 1992 Rio de Janeiro Earth Summit, Cuban Revolution leader Fidel Castro alerted about the risk for human species to disappear due to the fast and progressive damage caused to natural living conditions.
