HAVANA, Cuba, Sept 20 (acn) Cuba's contribution to the Slave Route Project was acknowledged in Paris by Ali Moussa, head of the UNESCO initiative, the purpose of which is to show the scourge of trade and the African influence in the world.
The project, presented in Haiti and several African countries, was officially launched in 1994 in Benin with the purpose of putting across the causes and consequences of this trade in human beings, the Prensa Latina (PL) news agency reported.
Cuba has been a member of that program since the beginning of the project and has a national committee, which has carried out an important research and preservation work of African heritage, Moussa told PL.
He recalled that in the Caribbean nation there's a museum on slavery, created in 2009 in the city of Matanzas, the largest of its kind in the Americas, where valuable objects, illustrations, texts and works of art explaining this phenomenon are on display.
UNESCO placed a crucial role to achieve the acknowledgement of trade as a crime against humanity, during the world conference against racism held in Durban in 2001.
