Author of "Cuba si, Yanquis No" Dies in ColombiaHAVANA, Cuba, Sept 11 (acn) The death of popular Colombian fighter and revolutionary singer-songwriter Alejandro Gomez Roa, creator of the legendary song Cuba si, yanquis no, leaves an unforgettable mark of profound links with the Caribbean island, a vital cycle that will last forever.

Gomez died from a heart attack on Tuesday, at 79, at his home of Tunza, in the central department of Boyaca. His life was closely linked to Cuba, with which it maintained a rock-solid proximity and royalty since the triumph of the Revolution led by Fidel Castro in 1959, the Cubadebate Web site reported on Wednesday.

His song "Cuba si, yanquis no" shook thousands of people worldwide in the early 1960s, a song that anticipated the new struggle Cuba would begin at the time for its sovereignty and independence against a powerful empire: the United States.

In 1960, Fidel asked him to sing his song in the presence of thousands of people present at the Latin American Stadium in Havana, and years later he received the Friendship Medal given by the Cuban Council of State.

Also standing out among his compositions are La solitaria estrella (Que viva Cuba, la bella) also dedicated to the island; Resiste, Chile, resiste; Nicaragua vencerá; Canto a Palestina and Al pueblo de Farabundo, among others.

A lawyer by profession, Gomez worked for his country's political prisoners. He devoted his life to the liberating causes of Latin America and the rest of the world.
