HAVANA, Cuba, Jun 17 (acn) Cuban rowers Angel Fournier, Adrian Oquendo and Eduardo Rubio will compete today in the Third World Cup in Poznan, Poland, running until June 19 next at Lake Malta.
After attending last weekend the contest based in Lucerne, Fournier, in the single scull event, and the pair Oquendo-Rubio, double sculls, will try to improve achieved positions in the Swiss city.
The two crews are qualified for the Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games, in coming August, where Cuba's main trump is Fournier, multi-medalist at world championships and cups.
In Lucerne, Fournier confirmed his status as favorite for being included in the final of the Olympics, since he won the bronze medal with time of 6: 59,310 minutes, behind New Zealander Mahe Drysdale (6: 54,110) and Czech Andrej Synek (6: 57,430), while Oquendo and Rubio finished third in the B final, valid for an overall ninth seat.
According to the website of the contest, the two Cuban boats will be in action today, with presence in the preliminary heats, in an opening day that will include repechage events and quarterfinals.
Semifinals of the 14 events summoned will be on Saturday, while the medal discussions will be on Sunday.
The best result of Cuban rowers in Olympics was the fifth seat reached in Barcelona 92 by Ismael Carbonell, Arnaldo Rodriguez and Roberto "Waco" Ojeda -late- in the men's coxed pair event.
