Cuban women's basketball team debuts in France

Cuban women's basketball team debuts in FranceHAVANA, Cuba, Jun 13 (acn) Cuba will debut today against the local team in the women's basketball qualifying Olympic tournament, which will host France until June 19.

This event, based in the city of Nantes, will bring together 12 teams and will grant five tickets to the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro in coming August.

Cuba was included on group A along with France, London 2012 runner-up, and New Zealand, squad they will face on June 15th.

Alberto Zabala, Cuban head coach, told ACN that in that tournament nothing will be easy because each team is very well prepared with the aim of qualifying to the Olympics.

Zabala said he likes to be with France in the same poole as according to the competitive system it guarantees not to face them in quarterfinals.

However, he added they must beat New Zealand to attend that stage and once there fight for one of the five seats in dispute.

We know it will be a very strong competition, but we are very optimistic because we have trained very well and the players are focused, united and convinced that it is possible to attend the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, he noted.

Here we are like a family and that strengthens us, said Zabala, who has spent eight years as head coach of Cuban women's basketball team, which last participation in Olympics was in Sydney 2000.
