HAVANA, Cuba, Jun 8 (acn) Cuban taekwondo athlete Rafael Alba (+80 kilograms) will try to move up in the world rankings, in order to have a less complicated draw for the competition in the Olympics of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Alba must improve the seat 17th in the universal list to opt for a better position in the draw for the summer event, next August; otherwise he will coincide with several major figures in their first outings, coach Roberto Abreu told reporters.
Thus, Cuba's main figure of the sport, will attend several international competitions, which award world ranking points as the Open (June 9-10) and the Pan American Championship (June 11-12), both in Queretaro, Mexico.
Indeed, the only Olympic qualified for Cuba in this sport undergo in that country a training base, along with his teammates Rosbelis Despaigne and Carlos Guzman, at La Loma High Performance Center, in San Luis Potosi, Abreu said during the preparatory seminar to Rio.
After completion of the two events, Alba will return to La Loma for a second training period, June 13 to 18, before competing in the Opens of Korea (June 30 to July 5) and Luxembourg (July 9-10), where he must be among the top three, to add units to the ranking.
The coach added that Alba is currently subjected to a plan to increase body mass, from 92 to 97 kg, in order to stabilize in 95 kg and thus approaching the weight of his opponents, who have advantage on him regarding size, reach and power in kicking.
Similarly, the world champion in Puebla 2013 (Mexico) and bronze medalist in Chelyabinsk 2015 (Russia), will complete his training stage from July 24 to August 18 with another training base in Brazil, venue of the Olympic Games, before his debut on August 20th.
Cuban taekwondo has won five medals in Olympics, one gold, two silver and as many bronze, from Sydney 2000 (Australia), when the sport debuted in the Olympic competition.
