HAVANA, Cuba, Jun 7 (acn) The 11th American Continental Chess Championship that took place in San Salvador was won by Peruvian Emilio Córdova and Cubans that attended the event finished far from top and thus could not get tickets to the 2017 World Cup.
The best performances of the Caribbean nation were the 11th spot of Yuri Gonzalez (seven units), who in the final round drew with Colombian Sergio Barrientos (7), followed by the 16th seat of Roberto Carlos Sanchez (7), who was the executioner of his teammate Lazaro Bruzón (6).
The latter came to the event as top seed given his 2 679 ELO points, but he had a balance of four wins, equal number of draws and three losses, thus losing 25.3 units.
The also Cuban Isan Ortiz (6.5) finished 19th and did not have a good performance either after losing in the final round to Guatemalan Winston Cu Hor (7.5).
Meanwhile, Kevel Oliva (6.5) and the national junior champion, Abel Fabian Lopez (6), completed the performance of Cubans in seats 18th and 29th, in that order.
The contest granted four tickets for the 2017 World Cup, and in addition to Cordova, winner with 9 points from possible 11, they were reached by American Aleksandr Lenderman (8.5), Canada's Anton Kovalyov (8) and Argentine Diego Flores (7.5).
The latter had to win his berth through a rapid games event after finishing tied with four other players the regular contest.
