HAVANA, Cuba, Jun 7 (can) The table tennis player Hugo Calderano kept the Brazilian supremacy in the ITTF 2016 Latin American Cups, when winning the title in the sixth edition of the event held in Guatemala City.
According to the website of the International Federation of the sport, Calderano, who beat 4-1 Mexican Marcos Madrid the final, won his first title in this tournament and extended, in the men's event, the exclusive domain of the representatives of the South American nation.
The Brazilian victorious path started with Gustavo Tsuboi in 2011, as host in Rio de Janeiro, crown he also won in Havana 2015 (Cuba), same amount of scepters achieved by his countryman Thiago Monteiro in San Jose 2012 (Costa Rica) and Santo Domingo 2013 (Dominican Republic).
In addition, Cazuo Matsumoto, who in the edition of Asuncion 2014 (Paraguay) defeated Madrid in the final, holds one title.
Precisely Calderano is one of the athletes qualified to Rio de Janeiro 2016, next August, who attended this contest, along with Madrid and Cubans Andy Pereira and Jorge Moisés Campos, who were eliminated in quarterfinals.
In that phase, Pereira, Cuban leading player, lost 2-4 to Madrid, and Campos was defeated 1-4 by Eric Jouti, while in the women's event the also Cuban player Idalys Lovet failed to advance from the group stage after accumulating two defeats in as many presentations.
The women's event was won by Colombian Lady Ruano, who beat 4-3 in the final Mexican Yadira Silva; they both had the ticket to Rio, as well as Venezuelan Gremlis Arvelo and Brazilians Gui Lin and Caroline Kumahara, who accumulates three titles in the history of the young tournament.
These players, with ticket already secured to the Olympics, were honored at the opening ceremony of the event, which was attended by Juan Vila, president of the Latin American Table Tennis Union, among other officials of the host country.
