HAVANA, Cuba , Jun 2 (acn) T he three Cuban Grand Masters (GM) involved in the 11th American Continental Chess Championship in the Salvadoran capital, where Canadian Anton Kovalyov is the current leader, appear from 9th to 11th seats.
After a seventh round with a win and two draws, the three of them total five points, but Yuri Gonzalez has a better tiebreak and is followed by Lazaro Bruzon and Isan Ortiz, in that order.
As reported by www.chess-results.com, Yuri defeated the host Daniel Arias, while Bruzon drew with Argentine Alan Pichot and Ortiz imitated him when facing American Aleksandr Lenderman.
The latter reached 5.5 points and appears fourth in the standings which is led by Kovalyov with six units after beating the also American Sergey Erenburg, as Peruvian Emilio Cordova signed peace with Anower Liang, also from USA.
Cordova also owns six units, but dropped to second spot by worst tiebreak, while Liang appears third with 5.5.
The performance of the Caribbean players has been really unstable, as they have not yet faced almost any of the current leaders and it has been impossible for them to access better positions.
In the countdown they are already facing, they will need to be very efficient to aspire to earn any of the four tickets to the 2017 FIDE World Cup the contest grants.
In today's matches, Yuri will rival Erenbrug, and for worse luck, Bruzon and Isan will face each other. At the top, Kovalyov will clash with Cordova, and Lenderman´s opponent will be Liang.
This is an 11-round Swiss system tournament and in case of ties for the WC berths, the definition will be through rapid games .
