Cuban pole vaulter Silva finishes third in Rome´s Golden Gala

HAVANA, Cuba, Jun 3 (acn) Pole vaulter Yarisley Silva won the bronze medal at the fifth stop of the IAAF Diamond League, based in Rome, Italy, tourney in which Cuba was represented by four competitors.

Silva, London 2012 Olympic silver medalist, reached the awards podium with record of 4.60 meters, insufficient to overcome Greeks Ekaterini Stefanidi and Nikoleta Kyriakopoulou, both with 4.75 m.
Stefanidi won the gold medal for fewer attempts and thus she earned 10 points; while Kyriakopoulou got six units and Yarisley won four.
With this result, Silva repeated the third seat in Rabat, Morocco, last May, although on that occasion she jumped 10 centimeters less.
Also on Thursday at the Pietro Mennea Golden Gala, Cuban triple jumper Liadagmis Povea finished fifth with a jump of 14.33 m, in event won by Colombian Caterine Ibarguen (14.78), who extended to 34 her number of consecutive wins in international competitions.
Kazakh Olga Rypakova (14.51) took over the silver metal, while Shanieka Thomas (14.46) and Kimberly Williams (14.38), both from Jamaica, finished third and fourth, respectively, as reflected in the IAAF website.
In other performances of Cuban athletes, the short hurdler Yordan O'Farrill could not finish the race when tripping over one of the fences; while the sprinter Roberto Skyers finished sixth in the men's 200 meter with time of 20.54 seconds.
The IAAF Diamond League, in its seventh edition, will have 14 stops and a new scoring system that will reward those who finish among the first six in each event.
