HAVANA, Cuba, May 31 (acn) Cuban Angel Fournier finished third in the men's lightweight single in the World Rowing Cup in Lucerne, Switzerland, a result that confirms him as a possible medalist in the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
According to the website of the contest, Fournier, multi-medalist in world cups and championships, won the bronze medal with time of 6: 59,310 minutes, behind New Zealander Mahe Drysdale (6: 54,110) and Czech Andrej Synek (6: 57,430).
Fournier scored better time in semifinals where he finished second with time of 6: 58,690, only surpassed by Synek (6: 56,510), while the winner in the other semifinal was Drysdale (6: 55.210), ahead of Lithuanian Mandaguas Griskonics (6: 55,920).
Cuba also competed in the men's double sculls through Adrian Oquendo and Eduardo Rubio (6: 23.740), who finished third in the B final, beaten by France (6: 20,830) and Germany (6: 23.350).
Oquendo and Rubio are also qualified for the Rio de Janeiro Olympics, scheduled to take place from next August 5 to 21.
The A final of this event was won by Croats Valent Sinkovic-Martin Sinkovic (6: 14.310), escorted by New Zealanders Christopher Harris-Robert Manso (6: 16.250) and Lithuanian Rolandas Mascinkas-Saulius Ritter (6: 17,620).
With just these two crews, Cuba (0-0-1) finished 18th in the standings, which was led by New Zealand (3-2-3), followed by UK (2-2-1) and Australia (2-2-0).
