HAVANA, Cuba, May 30 (acn) Matanzas´ Claudia Baró ignored the presence of local stars when winning the gold medal in the women's points race event of the track cycling Cuba Cup, at national velodrome Reinaldo Paseiro, east of Havana.
Mexico won the competition, with seven titles, followed by Holguin (2-2-1), Matanzas (1-4-1), Ciego de Avila (1-3 -1), Artemisa (1-0-2), Guatemala (1-0-1), Las Tunas (1-0-1), Havana (0-3-3), Granma (0-2-2) and Pichincha, from Ecuador, (0-0-2).
However, the main news was provided by Baro, who took advantage of her compatriot Iraida Garcia, Granma's Arlenis Sierra and Artemisa´s Marlies Mejías were just focused on each other, according to the digital edition of the sports publication JIT.
So, Baro escaped from the pack and won with 45 points, followed by Garcia, Sierra and Ciego de Avila's Mailin Sanchez (all with 14), Mejias (13) and Matanzas's Olga Echenique (8).
In the men's event the champion was Holguin's Alejandro Parra (84), escorted by Havana's Alejandro Carriles (68) and Matanzas´ Maikol Hernandez (63), in that order.
Meanwhile, the men's 1 km time trial was won by Guatemalan Marcos Garcia (1: 07,108 minutes), followed by Ciego de Avila's Rodolfo Gómez (1: 08,878) and Havana's Leandro Marcos (1: 09,168), said JIT.
Yesterday's other event was the Keirin which was won by Mexico, one of the eight nations attending the contest.
