HAVANA, Cuba, May 16 (acn) The first rally in 58 years of speedboats from Florida to Cuba will arrive tomorrow to the Bay of Havana, which will symbolize the revival of this nautical activity between the United States and the Caribbean island.
About 90 American crews will star in an event that had its beginnings in 1922 and its last edition nearly six decades ago, told at a press conference José Miguel Diaz Escrich, commodore of the Hemingway International Nautical Club, in this city.
He said that that day, at approximately 8:00 am, 20 speedboats will leave from Key West, and they are expected to arrive between 10:30 and 11:00 am at the Bay of Havana, where they will make exhibitions along the seawall promenade (Malecon) up to the mouth of Almendares River.
Hosted by the Yacht Club of Key West, the meeting will be conducive to the signing of a friendship agreement between the Florida Powerboat Club and the Hemingway International Yacht Club, which will open the doors to new meetings, emphasized Diaz Escrich.
It was also announced the holding tomorrow of the Regatta Friendship Cup in front of the Malecon, with the participation of a fleet of nine Hobie Cats and three Snipes, crewed by American athletes and from the Cuban Sailing Federation.
These US ships are part of the Havana Cat Challenge, which was first organized in 2000, but until last year could not be repeated due to lack of permits, as part of the blockade policy of USA against Cuba.
After commenting pride for visiting the island, George Bellenger, founder of the event, stressed that the initiative aims to build a bridge of friendship based on culture and love for the sea.
It was known that among the 18 events planned this year with the US boating community, it excels the Havana Key West Yacht Club Challenge, to be held on June 20 with the assistance of 25 vessels and more than 100 yachtsmen.
Also, in July, it will take place the Havana World Record Challenge, in which James Dennoyer, a member of the Yacht Club of Key West and the Hemingway International Nautical Club, will try to set a new speed record of less than one hour between Key West and Havana.
Last August, German Roger Klüh covered in one and a half hours the 145 kilometers separating the two territories on board of his boat Apache Star.
