HAVANA, Cuba, Apr 15 (acn) In order to accumulate the most points for the Olympic ranking, four members of the Cuban women's national road cycling team will participate from May 19 to 22 in the Pan American championship of that sport, in Tachira, Venezuela.
Cuba will be represented at the city of San Cristobal by the continental multi-champion Arlenis Sierra, Marlies Mejias, Iraida Garcia and experienced Yumari Gonzalez, Hector Ruiz, national commissioner of the sport, exclusively told ACN.
The main purpose of the Caribbean squad will be finishing among top places and thereby obtain the necessary points to reach qualification for the summer event in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in coming August, said Ruiz.
He also referred to the possibility of being represented in the Brazilian city in the two cycling events (road and track), if Mejias, already assured in the omnium since the world championship in early March, in London, UK, manages to get the ticket.
He also recalled that the WC multi-medalist Lisandra Guerra, who is at present in Switzerland, as part of her preparation for the Olympics, is also qualified for the track competition in Rio de Janeiro.
Regarding the men's road, Ruiz noted that recently returned Jose Mojica, who ended in fifth seat in the Tour of Brazil with the continental club Start Cycling, from Argentina, in addition to finish sixth in the KOM event of the same circuit.
He had previously competed with the South American squad in the Uruguay Tour, where he did not record the good performance he achieved in the Brazilian event, but it is a great omen for the Cuban men's cycling, which is working to get ahead, added the commissioner.
Also, the Cuban men's team will participate next May in a circuit in Guadeloupe, while the women's squad will wait for the little likely invitation to the Tour of Costa Rica, which closes the qualifying race to Rio in the Americas and where the host country will seek to obtain Olympic tickets, Ruiz stated.
