HAVANA, Cuba, Mar 9 (acn) With the inclusion of frontball as another of its modalities, Basque pelota aims at its global expansion and attract even more young people, said Xavier Casaubón, president of the International Federation of this sport.
In a meeting with reporters at the National Theatre, Casaubón highlighted how easy is the practice of frontball, event that consists in hitting with the hand a small ball against the wall.
With that, he noted, we would follow the same line of work of the International Olympic Committee, which seeks to eliminate the expensive facilities in its construction and maintenance; in addition to reconquer the sport in the street with participation of youth.
The executive , who occupies that role since the end of 2014, said that Havana is a place he always remembers and carries in his heart, while he assessed Cuba as a power in that sport.
He added that his working priorities include the consolidation, renovation and expansion of Basque pelota, to make it more attractive and more practiced in various parts of the world.
Casaubón explained that, in conjunction with the International Federation and the Cuban authorities, they have provided a plan of rehabilitation of facilities in Havana and other parts of the island, with a particular focus on José Carrasco and Diaz Arguelles Complexes.
The idea is to further enhance the sport and contribute to continue its development in the country, which in turn will help to expand it in Central America and the Caribbean.
Meanwhile, Paulo Hernandez, president of the organization at regional level, said they hope Basque pelota to be maintained within the Central American and Caribbean Games, and to that end we will work with the Organizing Committee of the next of these events, Barranquilla 2018, in Colombia, to provide them an important contribution of sports facilities as well as better prepared athletes and coaches.
