HAVANA, Cuba, Feb 15 (acn) Yalennis Castillo and Idalis Ortiz helped Cuba to finish fifth in the women's Judo Open in Rome, Italy, when winning gold and bronze medals, respectively, at the close of the tournament won by China with one gold, two silver and three bronze medals.
China was followed by the host (1-1-0), Mongolia (1-0-4), South Korea (1-0-4), Cuba (1-0-1), France (1-0-0) and Puerto Rico (1-0-0), the seven countries that at least won a title.
According to the website of the event, which featured 139 judokas from 29 nations, Castillo ( 78 kg) won the crown by defeating in the final Italian Assunta Galeone.
She had previously beaten the also Italian Lucia Tangorre, Chinese Zhehui Zhang and Mongolian Lkhamegd Purevjargal, in that order.
Meanwhile, Ortiz (+78 kilos) reached the bronze when defeating South Korean Jiyoung, after beating French Rebecca Ramanich and Brazilian Maria Suelen Altheman.
She lost in semifinals to China's Sisi Ma, who sent her to the playoffs.
The other Cuban competing this Sunday was Onix Cortés, who lost her first bout by Ippon against French Gwenaelle Viard.
On Saturday, Dayaris Mestre (48) and Maricet Espinosa (63) finished fifth in their respective divisions, results that also granted points to the final placement in the standings.
Rome was the second stop of the disciples of Armando Padron on their European tour, as the previous weekend they attended the Grand Slam in Paris, France, while the third and final stop will be at the Grand Prix of Germany, from February 19 to 21.
The main goal of Padrón´s pupils -only five- is to keep adding points for the world ranking that grants 14 direct tickets towards the Olympic Games to be held next August in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil .
