HAVANA, Cuba, Feb 13 (acn) The second edition of the Havana International Triathlon will start today and will be attended by more than 400 athletes from 32 countries in the categories of popular sprint and middle distance, in both sexes.
The event will have its starting point in the Hemingway Marina and finish line at the Anti-Imperialist Tribune, where the medals will be given by sports glories of the country, as well as works by famous Cuban painters.
Today, at a press conference held at the Havana Club, it was released that Spanish Marcel Zamora will not defend the crown he won in the middle distance (1.9 km swimming -90 km biking -21 km running) last year, due to a recent surgery, although he will give prestige to the event with his presence.
Zamora boasts a list of achievements full of excellent results in highest international events, as those reached in the Ironman circuit, when winning five of its phases conducted in Monaco (2006 and 2007) and Paris (2006, 2007 and 2008).
In this category, Cuba will be represented by Raul Alcolea and Carlos Rafael Rodriguez in the men's event, and Yadira Corona in the women's contest.
The overall figure of the competition is around 409 representatives from 32 nations, with highlight of leading local contestants like Michel González and Leslie Amat, and several athletes up to 70 years of age, who deserve recognition for their participation and courage.
The elite sprint race (750 meters swimming-20 km biking -5 km running ), with starting and finishing line at the Hemingway Marina, in which Cuba is optimistic to reach the podium, especially through González and Amat, will take place tomorrow.
Alejandro Puerto, national commissioner of this sport, told ACN this will be an excellent training for domestic athletes towards major international competitions.
