Cuban GM Bruzon finishes 14 in Gibraltar Chess Festival

http://prensa-latina.cu/images/stories/Fotos/2016/enero/29/ajedres_lazaro_bruzon.jpgHAVANA, Cuba, Feb 5 (acn) Cuban GM Lazaro Bruzon (2 666 Elo points) defeated Ukrainian GM Mariya Muzychuk (2 554) during the 10 th and final round of the Tradewise Gibraltar Chess Festival 2016.

Thus, the Caribbean player finished tied with 15 contestants, including Russian Dmitry Jakovenko (2 732), Hungarian Richard Rapport (2 721), French Laurent Fressinet (2 700), Austrian Markus Ragger (2 689), among others, with 7 points but he was 14th by tiebreak.

Frenchman Maxime Vachier-Lagrave (2 785) and American Hikaru Nakamura (2 787) finished tied on top of the standings with 8 units after beating French Sebastien Maze (2 591) and Spanish David Antón (2 639), respectively, but the Nakamura won the tourney after playing an extra game between them

They were escorted by a group of six players who totalled 7.5 points headed by French Etienne Bracot (2 697), Indians S. P. Sethuraman (2 639) and Pentala Harikrishna (2 755), English Gawain Jones (2 625), Chinese Li Chao (2 751) and Israeli Emil Sutovsky (2 647), in that order.

The other Cuban player attending the event, IM Rodney Perez (2 332), ended up 152nd with 4.5 units after losing in this round with Czech FM Jiri Rydl (2 412).

Perez was not good at the event but Bruzon did have a good performance which included 5 wins, 4 draws and only one loss, against the runner-up of the tournament, and it is expected to climb some seats in the world ranking to be published next March.
