HAVANA, Cuba, Dec 17 (acn) Ciego de Avila was ratified on top of the Cuban baseball championship by defeating Industriales 5-4 at the start of the second round of the tournament.
Despite allowing six hits with five walks, the ace Vladimir García managed to allow only one earned run in five innings, achieving thus his seventh win, while veteran Frank Monthiet took the loss.
Ariel Borrero, reinforcement from Villa Clara, led the offensive of the winners by hitting 2 for 4 with a double and an RBI, supported by catcher Osvaldo Vazquez, 2 for 3 with an RBI.
Lázaro Blanco allowed six hits and struck out three batters in seven innings and two thirds to lead Granma to a closed 3-0 win over Pinar del Rio, with offensive highlight for catcher Alexander Guerra, author of a homer.
Matanzas beat 10-3 Holguin with the sixth victory of the season for Yoanni Yera and offensive highlight to third baseman Yurisbel Gracial who batted 2 for 3 with a homer and two RBIs for the cause of winners.
Finally, Las Tunas defeated 4-3 Isla de la Juventud , with Danel Castro as offensive leader with two RBIs, in a game won by Aldo Conrado as reliever.
After these results, Ciego de Avila leads the standings of Cuban baseball with 32 wins and 13 losses, escorted by Industriales (30-16), Granma ( 29-17), Pinar del Río ( 28-17), Matanzas and Las Tunas (27-19), Holguin (26-20) and Isla de la Juventud (25-21).
