Cuban judo men's team trains in Japan

Cuban judo men's team trains in JapanHAVANA, Cuba, Dec 1 (acn) The Cuban judo men's team participating in an Asian tour trains at Ryutsu Keizai University, in Japan, where they will give participate from December 4 to 6 at the Tokyo Grand Slam.

After competing in the Grand Prix of Qingdao, China, and Jeju, South Korea, the pupils of Justo Noda joined Yandry Torres, 60 kilos, and Carlos Tondique (66), who already were training at this educational center with similar objective, under the direction of coach Yordanis Arencibia, Dr. Uvelino Moreno told ACN via internet.

Moreno added that Noda, Magdiel Estrada (73), Ivan Silva (81), Asley Gonzalez (90), Jose Armenteros (100) and Alex Garcia (+100) arrived in Japan last Sunday looking for points for the 2016 Summer Olympics.

So far, the only medalists are Gonzalez and Armenteros who won silver medals in Qingdao and Jeju, respectively, while Silva and Garcia finished fifth in the Chinese and South Korean competitions, in that order.

The Asian tour will end with the Tokyo Grand Slam, one of the tournaments that give points for the world ranking, which grants 22 (men) and 14 (women) direct tickets for the 2016 Summer Olympics.

The Cuban women's team that also participates in the Asian tour remains training in South Korea, and will also attend the Japanese competition under the direction of coaches Armando Padron and Ronaldo Veitia.

Maricet Espinosa (63) won the bronze medal in Qingdao, where Idalis Ortiz (+78) finished fifth, while Dayaris Mestre (48) and Ortiz ranked fifth and seventh on South Korean soil.

The squad is completed by Aliuska Ojeda (57) and Yalennis Castillo (78), and physiotherapist Joaquin Ferrer.
