HAVANA, Cuba, Nov 11 (acn) Cuba achieved its first victory in the 2015 WBSC Premier 12 by beating the Netherlands 6-5 in match held in the Intercontinental Stadium of Taichung City, Chinese Taipei.
Frank Monthiet, Cuban starting pitcher, was substituted by Miguel Lahera in the 4th inning after allowing four earned runs, including a homer by Dutch catcher Shawn Zarraga when the Caribbean team was losing 4-1.
Cuba took the lead in the sixth inning when combining hits by Lourdes Y. Gourriel, Yulieski Gourriel and Alfredo Despaigne plus sacri-fly by catcher Yosvany Alarcón and a homer by Stayler Hernández, valid to score four runs.
Netherlands equalized in the bottom of that same inning thanks to Lahera´s lack of control and he was replaced by Jose Angel Garcia, who pitched for the rest of the game without allowing the Europeans to score again, earning thus the win for his side.
The winning run came in the eighth inning when Alarcon singled to drive in Yuliesky Gourriel from third base.
Stayler Hernández led Cuban artillery by hitting 2 for 3 with a homer and three RBIs, seconded by Yulieski Gourriel, Alfredo Despaigne and Yosvany Alarcón, each with two hits.
After losing 5-1 in its opener against Canada, Cuba now has balance of one win and one loss in Group A of WBSC Premier 12, and its next match will be on Thursday against Puerto Rico.
