Canada beats Cuba in first game of Premier 12HAVANA, Cuba, Nov 10 (acn) The Canadian baseball team beat its Cuban counterpart in the first game of both squads in the Premier 12 underway in Taipei and Japan.

Canada scored three runs in the very first inning against Cuban starter Yosvany Torres, who allowed three hits, including homer by third baseman Pete Orr, and was relieved by lefty Liván Moinelo.

Cuba closed the gap when Alfredo Despaigne brought one runner in with a fly to the centerfield with bases loaded against starter Chris Leroux, but second baseman Rudy Reyes conceded the third out to finish Cuban hopes to tie the game.

Reliever Moinelo pitched five scoreless innings, but in the seventh, with over 100 pitches and clearly exhausted allowed two more runs.

Meanwhile Leroux was the winner, allowing only three hits and striking up eight Cubans in 5 innings and two thirds. Relievers Andrew Albers and Scott Richmond didn't allow any runs.

Cuba will now face Nederland, a team that beat host Chinese Taipei in the opening day 7-4.
