HAVANA, Cuba, Oct 21 (acn) The World Artistic Gymnastics Championships to be held for the first time in the Scottish city of Glasgow, from October 23 to November 1st, will receive a record number of more than 500 competitors from 80 countries.
According to Jit digital publication, the historical figure of participants was released by the organizers of the event, which will award berths to the Olympic Games in the Brazilian city of Rio de Janeiro next year.
Manrique Larduet and Randy Leru, in the men's event, and the women Marcia Videaux and Dovelis Torres will be the Cuban representatives in this strong contest.
The sports website adds that the four of them already visited the Hydro Arena, home of the competition where they will compete from next Friday.
Carlos Gil and Yareimi Vazquez, coaches of the Cuban men's and women's teams respectively, say their pupils are full of courage and go in search of a good result, especially with the mind set on qualifying for the Rio event, although they should be included among the medalists for it.
The previous edition in the Chinese city of Nanking was won by the United States and 13 nations at least won one medal.
Cuba does not attend such events since 2003, while its unique medals date back to the edition of 2001 in Ghent, Belgium, when Erick Lopez finished second in parallel bars and Charles Leon won the bronze medal in the vault event.
