HAVANA, Cuba, Oct 15 (acn) Cuban Leinier Dominguez finished 13th in the World Blitz Chess Championship based in Berlin, which was won by Russian Alexander Grischuk.
After finishing fourth in the first 11 games, Leinier drew many times in the remaining 10 and was away from pole positions with 13.5 units of possible 21.
The Cuban totaled seven wins, 13 draws and only lost Russian Sergey Karjakin, the man who just days ago was crowned at the World Cup .
Several of Lenier´s draws were against super stars like Indian Viswanathan Anand, Armenian Levon Aronian, Frenchman Maxime Vachier-Lagrave and Russian Peter Svidler.
The crown went this time to the hands of Grischuk who totaled 15.5 points, half unit more than Vachier and Russian Vladimir Kramnik, second and third in that order.
Norwegian Magnus Carlsen who was the current monarch and had won the rapid event, finished sixth with 14 points after losing to Grischuk and Ukrainian Vassily Ivanchuk, fourth with 14.5 units.
The also Cuban Lazaro Bruzon amassed only 11.5 units to appear 61st.
The blitz event brought together 158 competitors who faced 21 rounds with three minutes per game plus two seconds of increment after each move, a version that is also known as Lightning.
Leinier was world champion in 2008 in this modality but in a different context as the event was attended by the best 16 players at that moment.
