HAVANA, Cuba, Sep 9 (acn) The Cuban Ismael Borrero caused a stir in the Wrestling World Championships in Las Vegas, USA, when he won the 59 kg division of Greco-Roman style.
Borrero, 23, and fifth in the World Cup last year, had a great day and won his six bouts, to reach thus the most important achievement of his career.
In the final fight, Borrero categorically beat 8-0 Azeri Rovshan Bayramov, double Olympic silver medalist and four times world medalist, to give Cuba its first title in the competition, which brings together over 650 competitors from 88 countries.
On his way to the gold, the young Cuban debuted with victory over his executioner in the recent Pan American Games in Toronto, American Spencer Mango (4-2), then he defeated German Denis Menezke (5-4), Belarusian Soslan Daurov (8-0 ), Kim Seung-hank from South Korea (8-6) and Kazakh Almar Kebispayev (9-1) in semifinals.
Meanwhile, five-time world champion Mijain Lopez stumbled for the second time in a World final against Turkish Ryza Kayaalp, his executioner also in 2011, and lost 0-1 in a tough bout.
Mijaín had had a great performance by beating in the opening 2-1 Russian Bilyal Makhov, to then defeat Lithuanian Mindaugas Mizgaitis (3-0), Estonia's Heiki Nabi (2-0), and American Robbie Smith (8-0) in the semifinals.
With these two medals in the Greco-Roman style, Cuba finished second (1-1-0) behind Turkey (2-0-0) and ahead of Azerbaijan (1-1-0) and Russia (1-0-4).
