HAVANA, Cuba, Jul 23 (acn) The Cuban delegation went up to the fourth position on the medal table in the 17th Pan-American Games in Toronto, Canada, after a day marked by Rafael Alba's gold medal in the tae kwon do tournament.
Alba starred in the most prominent result of Cuba on the 12th day of competitions, by winning the title in the division of more than 80 kilograms over Venezuelan Carlos Rivas, to achieve the third crown of the island in that sport.
Previously, Cuban tae kwon do athlete Lisbeilys Ferran lost 3-9 to Colombian Jessica Bravo in the fight for the bronze medal in the women's division of over 67 kilos.
The other title won by Cuba came in athletics, where hammer thrower Roberto Janet won the silver medal with a record of 74.78 meters, surpassed only by Kibwe Johnson (75.46), of the United States.
On the track, Cuban Rose Mary Almanza was below her potential by finishing fourth in the women's 800-meter finals with a time of 2: 01.82 minutes, behind Canadian Melissa Bishop (1: 59.62), American Alysia Montano (1: 59.76) and Brazilian Flavia Lima (2: 00.40).
Boxing offered another perfect performance for Cuba, which secured five tickets to the first finals of the discipline by way of the victories of Joahnys Argilagos, Andy Cruz, Yasnier Toledo, Arlen Lopez and Erislandy Savon.
Argilagos won 2-1 in the 49 kilograms over Venezuelan Yoel Finol; Cruz (56) defeated Canadian Kenny Lally3-0; Toledo (64) beat Brazilian Joedison Jesus 3-0; Lopez (75) won against Venezuelan Endry Saavedra 3-0;and Savon (91) finished off Chilean Miguel Veliz 3-0.
On the other hand, in the preliminary round of table tennis, Cuba achieved wins through Andy Pereira and Jorge Campos, against Chilean Gustavo Gomez and Guatemalan Hector Gatica, respectively, while Idalys Lovet added a win and a loss, like Leisy Jimenez.
In the women's volleyball tournament, the Cuban team lost 3-1 (25-18, 25-19, 22-25, 25-18) to the United States in the quarterfinals.
In addition, the Cuban women's squads of baseball and softball were also beaten by the United States 11-0 and 9-2, respectively.
With only four competitive days left, Cuba appears fourth in the continental competition with 25 gold, 20 silver and 30 bronze medals on a lis topped by the U.S.A. (76-65-60).
