Cuban rower wins silver medal in World Cup held in Italy

HAVANA, Cuba, Jun 22 (acn) Cuban Angel Fournier won his second world medal so far this year after finishing second in the men's single sculls event in the 2015 World Rowing Cup in Varese, Italy.

After achieving the title at the Bled Cup, in Slovenia, Fournier crossed the line with time of 6.46.710 minutes behind New Zealander Mahe Drysdale (6.45.220), London 2012 Olympic champion, and ahead of Belarus Stanislau Shcharbachenia (6.49.400).

With this result, the outstanding rower ratifies himself as the main trump card of Cuba for the Pan American Games this July in Toronto, Canada.

In the Canadian continental contest, Fournier must compete in single, double and quadruple events, as he did in Veracruz 2014 Central American and Caribbean Games, where he won three gold medals.

Fournier could also be the first Cuban rower Olympic medalist in Rio de Janeiro 2016, as so far, the best performance by an athlete of this nation is the fifth seat achieved by Ismael Carbonell, Arnaldo Rodriguez and the late Waco Ojeda, in the double sculls event in Barcelona 1992.
