HAVANA, Cuba, Jan 3 (acn) The Cuban pitcher Hector Manuel Mendoza debuted on Tuesday in the main circuit of Japan Professional Baseball in the 2-1 win of his team the Yomiuri Giants over the Orix Buffaloes.
Mendoza starred a two scoreless innings relief against six rivals, including two strikeouts; prove of the excellent sports shape of the speedy pitcher from Isla de la Juventud.
Before being called to first team of the Yomiuri Giants, Hector Manuel Mendoza successfully transited through Japanese minor league totalling six innings in seven matches, with a 1.42 ERA and nine strikeouts.
Mendoza is part of the Cuban preselection and is eligible to participate in the Pan American Games in July in the Canadian city of Toronto , as his companions Alfredo Despaigne and Frederich Cepeda, who are also playing in the Japanese baseball circuit.
Despaigne, who is currently injured, offensively highlights with the Chiba Lotte Marines averaging .279, result of 31 hits in 111 at-bats, including eight homers and as many doubles, plus 22 RBIs.
Meanwhile, Cepeda hits .279 with four homers and 11 RBIs in his passage through the second division of the Yomiuri Giants after a fateful performance with the first team this season, summarized in 18 at-bats without hits.
