HAVANA, Cuba, May 11 (acn) Cuban Pedro Pablo Pichardo set a national record in men´s triple jump in the sixth confrontation event of the national pre-selection, with a stage at Panamericano Stadium in the east of the city.
The sports publication Jit said that Pichardo, silver and bronze medallist at the World Championships in Moscow 2013 and indoors in 2014, reached 17.94 meters and left behind the previous record (17.85) achieved by Yoelbi Quesada on August 1997.
With this record, the athlete reached the eleventh best jump of all time, with which he was close to become the first triple jumper in the Caribbean island of over 18 meters.
Only Britain's Jonathan Edwards, who did it three times -18.00, 18.01,18.29-, American Kenny Harrison -18,09- and French Teddy Tamgho -18,04- have that privilege.
Jit describes Pichardo´s performance, his first official competition after his last participation in Cuba Cup on March 2014, as magnificent with jumps of 17.33 and 17.52 before entering his name in the record books.
Another good news is that he earned tickets for the world championships and the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro 2016.
Pichardo´s former personal best was of 17.76 meters, achieved in February of the previous season, a month before becoming the Cuba Cup record holder with 17.71.
His first international event in 2015 will be on May 15 in Doha, Qatar, beginning of the Diamond League in a year where he will also be in Toronto Pan American Games and the World Championships in Beijing.
Denia Caballero and Yaimé Perez, who won gold and silver medals in the women´s discus throwing with 67.87 -personal best- and 63.35 meters, respectively, also achieved world and Olympic tickets.
In addition, Roberto Janet, who won the men´s hammer throwing with 77.14 meters, earned a World Cup berth.
