Cuba beats Armenia in World Chess Team ChampionshipsHAVANA, Cuba, Apr 22 (acn) Cuba starred yesterday another high-flying performance by defeating Armenia in a match that included wins by Lazaro Bruzón and Yuniesky Quesada, which allowed them to remain at the forefront of the World Chess Team Championships.

One day after winning over the current champion Russia, in Tsaghkadzor, the Caribbean team beat 2.5-1.5 the host, totaling thus five points and remained at the top of the standings with Israel, which did the same against India.

Bruzón (2691 Elo points), with black pieces, beat Gabriel Sargisian (2674) in 40 moves of a Slav defense in the second board.

In the third board, Yuniesky (2629), with white pieces, was better than Vladimir Akopian (2666) in 29 moves of a Sicilian defense.

Meanwhile, in the fourth board Yuri González (2557) almost tasted victory but committed a costly error in the end and had to accept the loss at the expense of Hrant Melkumyan (2651) in 55 moves.

With the match 2-1 in their favor the Cubans pinned their hopes on Leinier Domínguez (2729), who drew with Levon Aronian (2770) in 70 moves of a Spanish opening.

China tied 2-2 with Russia, which remained winless, Hungary defeated 2.5-1.5 USA and Ukraine crushed 4-0 Egypt.

Chinese, Hungarians and Ukrainians now have four units, Armenia and Egypt (2), while USA and Russia appear on bottom of the table (1).

Today Cubans will have an apparently easy rival in Egypt, while Israel will face the Ukrainians.

The remaining matches are India-Hungary, Russia-US and Armenia-China.
