HAVANA, Cuba, Aug 22 (ACN) In a heartbreaker, the Cuban men's volleyball team fell 2-3 (25-14, 17-25, 24-26, 25-23, 11-15) to Brazil in the semifinals of the event at the 2nd Junior Pan American Games in Asuncion, Paraguay.
A match of ups and downs, full of emotions, took place at the SND Arena, where Darienn Ferrer's team came close to pulling off the upset of the tournament against the defending Games champion and once again the favorite to climb to the top of the awards podium.
Miguel Alejandro Gonzalez, alias Ragnar, stood out individually with 20 points, followed by Yusniel Gonzalez (17), while Maicon Dos Santos (16) and Thiery Oliveira (13) stood out for the winners.
The defeat left Cuba without a chance to contest for the crown in the tournament, so they will now compete for bronze against the loser of the other semifinal match, which already includes Argentina and Mexico.
In this multi-sport event, Cuba also participated in the women's event, finishing fifth among eight competing teams.
As an incentive, this version of the event grants tickets for the finalists (first and second place) to the Lima 2027 Pan American Games.
