HAVANA, Cuba, Aug 21 (ACN) Cuban women's wrestling team shone today in the quarterfinals and semifinals of the 2nd Junior Pan American Games Asuncion 2025, qualifying three out of four to the finals to be held this afternoon.
On mat B of the CEO Stadium, the defending Cali Valle 2021 57kg champion, Yainelis Sanz, comfortably won Argentina's Camila Amarilla (7-0) and then defeated Guatemala's Alisson Valdez in the semifinals by a score of 10-0.
Sanz, will seek to repeat her victory in a final against Mexico's Bertha Rojas, whom she defeated six-0 at the senior continental championship in Monterrey, Mexico, held in May.
In the semifinals, Greili Bencosme (50 kg), the Pan American runner-up four years ago in Colombia, defeated Emilie Gonzalez of the United States by technical superiority 11-0.The 22-year-old had previously emerged victorious against Venezuelan Nohalis Loyo.
Bencosme will compete for the title against Brazilian Ana Sales, whom she defeated eight-0 in the semifinals of the Pan American qualifier in Queretaro, Mexico.
For her part, Maria Fernanda Santana (62 kg), runner-up at the 2023 Pan American Games in Santiago, Chile, had a comfortable 6-0 victory over Ecuador's Leiddy Acuña and then celebrated in the semifinals with a superiority over Puerto Rican Carina Giangeruso.
Menwhile, Santana is eager to get revenge on her tormentor in the Mexican city, Venezuelan Astrid Montero, who won the Under23 Tournament held in April.
The least experienced member of the group led by Ivan Fundora and Alexis Estrabao, Dailianis Canales (68 kg), will have to fight for bronze after defeating Paraguayan Martina Meza (4-0) in the quarterfinals and losing by a shot to Gilbery Garcia of Venezuela.
Cuban team will try to match the three titles won by the women in the first edition in Cali-Valle 2021 in this highly competitive tournament.
