Cuban Marifelix to compete today at Senior Pan American Weightlifting Championship

HAVANA, Cuba, Jul 18 (ACN) Cuban Marifelix Sarria will compete today at Senior Pan American Weightlifting Championship, which will take place at the Miguel Calero Coliseum in the Colombian city of Cali.

Sarria, competing in the over 86 kilogram (kg) division, has as personal best in the biathlon 270 kg, with 115 kg in the snatch and 155 kg in the clean and jerk, achieved at the 2024 World Junior Championships in Leon, Spain.

In November of that same year, she made her debut at the World Championships in Manama, Bahrain, where she achieved a total of 267 kg—110 kg in the snatch and 157 kg in the clean and jerk—a result that allowed her to finish fourth in her weightlifting category.

For the continental competition in Cali, the goal is to improve on those results in order to place among the top three on the continent, according to Giniebra, head coach of the women's weightlifting team.

Her main rivals include US Mary Theisen-Lappen, with a total of 260 kg, and Dominican Crismery Dominga Santana Peguero, with 262 kg.

Marifelix Sarria is also the 2023 Central American champion from San Salvador and holds significant positions in the world rankings in her category.

The competition is not approved as a qualifier for the 2026 Central American and Caribbean Games in Santo Domingo, according to the Pan American Weightlifting Federation.
