WFP prepares extension of food security project in eastern Cuba

HOLGUIN, Cuba, Jun 27 (ACN) The World Food Program (WFP), sponsored by the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA), is preparing to launch the second phase of the Act Differently! Project, aimed at achieving nutritional security for vulnerable groups in eastern Cuba.

In an exclusive interview with the Cuban News Agency, Étienne Labande, WFP representative in the country, explained that the first phase, which began in 2020, led to the creation of a model that encompasses aspects of production, loss reduction, and access.

This involved supporting farmers to improve their work in terms of volume, diversity, and quality, aimed at social protection networks.

Due to the successful implementation in five municipalities in the eastern provinces, where 52 entities, more than 16 supply systems, and thousands of people were benefited, a five-year extension was approved, which will maintain the same objectives and benefit other territories, he added.

Among them are the municipalities of Yateras, in Guantanamo; Rafael Freyre, in Holguin; Río Cauto, in Granma; Songo-La Maya, in Santiago de Cuba; and Jesús Menéndez, in Las Tunas, where the project will pursue the integration of lessons learned, strengthen the link between science and production, and include a more scientific approach, he indicated.

Hyeon Han Kang, deputy director of the KOICA office, stated during the final day of the National Workshop on project results that the shared experiences highlight the involvement of local and national authorities, which contributed to the sustainability of the activities and improved nutritional conditions for children, the elderly, pregnant women, and their families.
