Cuban Baseball Defending Champion Struggles to be in Playoffs

Cuban Baseball Defending Champion Struggles to be in PlayoffsHAVANA, Cuba, Mar 5 (acn) With no margin for error against the danger of staying out of the playoffs of Cuban baseball, the reigning monarch Pinar del Río will assume today a commitment of life or death when receiving the visit of the sub-leader Granma.

The current champions recently suffered two extremely costly defeats as hosts against Holguin and now appear sixth on the standings with 39 wins and 36 losses, at three games of the called qualifying zone, when just 12 days remain.

In turn, the Granma Alazanes achieved couple of wins over Artemisa to remain in second place with balance of 45-30, and only a complete debacle on their performance could leave them outside the decisive stage of the championship.

Pinar del Río needs urgently reaching a positive outcome versus Granma, and expect their direct rivals for the fourth playoff berth, Industriales (42-33) and Isla de la Juventud (41-34), to achieve negative balance in their matches against Ciego de Avila (44-31) and Matanzas (48-27) in that order.

Especially Industriales will have a very tough opponent as visitor in the Tigers Ciego de Avila, which appear third, and are immersed in a winning streak of seven straight wins without forgetting they have the best win-loss ratio in the second phase (20-10).

For its part, the Isla de la Juventud Pirates seem destined to lose ground in the struggle for qualifying, as they will visit the leader Matanzas, which has remained thick and thin on top of the standings and go with safe passage towards its fourth consecutive postseason.
