HAVANA, Cuba, Feb 27 (acn) The Cuban U-17 soccer team will have a tough debut today against the favorite team of USA in the CONCACAF world cup qualifying tournament, based in Honduras.
At Francisco Morazan Stadium in San Pedro Sula, Fidel "Jiquí" Salazar’s pupils will try to achieve a positive result against Americans in group A which also includes Honduras, Jamaica, Guatemala and Trinidad and Tobago.
The Cubans have just played two friendly matches against Panama at Rommel Fernandez stadium with balance of one defeat by 0-4 and a 1-0 win, with goal scored by the central defender and captain Carlos Borromeo.
This contest of CONCACAF, which involves 12 teams, grants four berths to the World Cup, to be held this year in Chile. Panama, Mexico, Saint Lucia, Costa Rica, Haiti and Canada appear in group B.
Cuba has attended two U-17 World Cups: Scotland 1989 and Italy 1991 under the aegis of Coach Manuel Rodríguez.
